Workers and EFF picket outside Beacon Bay retirement home accusing it of racism

More than 100 members of the EFF picketed outside the Kennersley Park retirement village on Thursday amid allegations of racism.

Employees of the retirement park accused the matron of racism, discrimination, lack of professionalism, poor communication and disrespect.

Kennersley Park retirement village general manager Laurette Schafer said: “We do not condone racism or discrimination and have policies and procedures in place.

“We are investigating the matter with seriousness.”

EFF members and employees picketed outside the premises, with EFF leaders demanding a meeting with management to address the allegations and resolve the issues.

Angry and frustrated employees claimed the matron had poor management skills.

When two residents attempted to force their way into the retirement home after the road was blocked, EFF members banged on their car and tried to open the car door. The residents were forced to reverse.

Employees shared their experiences at the retirement village.

Nomthandazo Mateane accused the matron of discriminating against her because of her HIV status.

She was suspended in April after serving for 13 years.

“I made known to her when she came into office that I am Hiv-positive and on treatment. I have worked night shifts for years so my clinic visits don’t affect my work.”

She said she was suspended from duties after she approached the CCMA.

Another employee said she was injured on duty while lifting a wheelchair-bound resident onto a bed in February.

“When I told the matron about my injury she said it was not her fault.”

She has worn a support belt since her injury.

A third employee attended a disciplinary hearing last Thursday and is still awaiting the outcome.

Another employee said she had worked there for 19 years. The previous two matrons had been respectful, professional, and good communicators.

“We respected them too and they were able to address issues professionally.

“They were never rude.” She said the current matron joined in 2020 as a sister before becoming the matron.

“The matron is rude and uses harsh words. On one encounter I had gone to call a resident who was late for her meal.

“When the resident arrived I served her the first course while the others were on their second course.

“The matron shouted at me and proceeded to remind me that she is in charge.”

The employees demanded that the matron be relieved of her duties.

EFF chair Mziyanda Hlekiso said: “We are here to address the loud outcry of employees who have alleged that there is racism.”

He said employees should be treated with respect.

Schafer said: “I have always seen the staff as a team.

“There has been a communication breakdown between staff and management.

“We hope that going forward we can have clearer and better communication.

“We will look into a programme to assist with management style and will employ HR to assist in staff issues.”
