Novate Supers clinch Gonubie Sixes title

PETER MARTIN

The Gonubie Sixes season ended at the Gonubie ground on Tuesday with some big hitting and some excellent bowling although a few catches were dropped.

The day belonged to the Novate Supers which beat the table-topping Chemex Thundercats in the final.

Good batting from Tre Gilbert and Joshua Dodd saw the Supers home despite some fine batting from Jonty Crainey of the Thundercats. Supers wicketkeeper, Tristan Rowe won the fielder of the tournament award, although Brian Voke was also considered.

In the third-place play-off the Sovereign Mavericks managed to beat the Charteris and Barnes Challengers. Mavericks’ Jacques van der Merwe, the bowler of the tournament, along with Ben van der Merwe and Michael Hess did an excellent job of containing the Challengers batsmen.

Then the Stephenson Strikers managed to see off the Buco force for fifth place. Brody Taylor, the top run scorer of the tournament, again made runs for the Force but despite being ably assisted by Seth Collins this was not enough to beat the Strikers.

Rhett Shaw produced excellent figures with both bat and ball to ensure a Strikers win and he was supported by veteran Jason Kumm with the bat.

The Optimum Responders started as favourites against the Work Africa Hotshots with their EC Iinyathi pair of Marco Marais and Jason Niemand but some excellent bowling by Aviwe Tisani and Adam Rogers upfront kept the Responders in check.

Eventually the Responders finished in seventh position and the Hotshots unfortunately did not live up to their name and took the wooden spoon in eighth place.

After the final former Border all-rounder Russell Krug, whose name had been drawn, calmly managed to throw a ball into a ring of tyres to win a brand new bat sponsored by Work Africa Sport.

The Southern Sun group were a key sponsor of the event while Raddison Blu Hotel, the Beach Hotel, both of Gqeberha, Sanook Restaurants, FNB, Mix and Match Cafe and the Gonubie Spar and many other cricket-loving sponsors ensured a mass of prizes.
