Teaching now a misery

— Nathan Miles, Pefferville

Teaching has become one of the most stressful professions to be in. Teachers are exploited and subjected to poor working conditions, and they no longer feel valued as assets of this country.

Their passion for teaching has diminished as a result. Sgb-appointed teachers are affected particularly badly. State schools are in dire need of educators but the government offers these highly qualified SGB teachers salaries that can be compared to a domestic worker’s income.

There are many inconsistencies in employment contracts and benefits because SGBS do not adhere to policies.

The education department has failed our SGB appointees, who sometimes teach for years with no prospect of a permanent post.

Some of them even die so poor their families cannot afford to pay for their burial.

It is time the department reviewed its policies and the legislation regulating conditions of service. The financial burden should be completely removed from state schools for Sgb-appointed teachers, so that a more efficient and effective system can acknowledge and benefit SGB appointees.

Please don’t let us lose any more dedicated teachers.
