Bourse firmer as global mood lifts

The JSE ended higher on Friday as global sentiment improved, rounding off another successful week during which the all-share index hit a series of record levels.

The index gained 0.35% to 80,791 points on Friday, stretching the year-to-date gains to just shy of 11%. The top-40 index rose 0.38%.

At 5.30pm on Friday, the rand was off 0.3% to R17.22/$, having weakened 12% over the past 12 months on a rolling basis.

In commodity markets, Brent crude was up 0.5% to $87 per barrel while gold eased 0.35% to $1,921.41/oz and the platinum price weakened 0.8% to $1,011.33oz.

The near-term focus for global markets will be the release of the US nonfarm payrolls report next week, as well as earnings reports from big US tech companies.
