Van Wyk said leading the agency had its fair share of challenges

The Buffalo City Metro Development Agency’s (BCMDA) interim board has appointed a new interim CEO who assumed duties last week.

Mxolisi “Prince” Sibam was appointed as acting interim CEO for the next three months.

Sibam takes over from Noel van Wyk, who has acted for the past three months.

Van Wyk has been acting CEO since the suspension of former CEO Bulumko Nelana.

Nelana was suspended in 2022, pending an investigation into the extension of his contract. His five-year contract extension was subsequently terminated by the interim board last week.

However, Nelana is expected to challenge the termination in court.

When the Daily Dispatch contacted incoming CEO Sibam on Sunday, he chose to keep mum.

Van Wyk, who is a member of the interim BCMDA board, said he would be returning to his old position and performing his old duties.

Van Wyk said leading the agency had its fair share of challenges but thanked all the stakeholders he had worked with.

The former CEO said he had no doubt the agency would give the new CEO the same support it had given him.

The announcement comes a few days after former CEO Nelana’s suspension was set aside and after his contract was terminated.

On Tuesday, the high court in Makhanda set aside Nelana’s 2022 suspension. However, a day later, when reporting for duty for the first time since his suspension, Nelana was fired.

Nelana had been on precautionary suspension pending a probe into the circumstances surrounding his contract extension.

He confirmed last week, through his legal team, that he would take the matter back to court.

Sibam, who like Van Wyk is a member of the agency's interim board, doubles as the SAFA-BCM president.
