Children from Mzamomhle in Gonubie had smiles on their faces after receiving new school shoes, uniforms and school bags at an event held at the weekend at Mzamomhle community hall.

About 63 children benefited from initiative. Thirty-three were children adopted by the organisation and another 30 were pupils from foundation phase.

The annual back-to-school campaign, organised by Mizzie Zokufa Foundation, has been running for the past six years.

NPO founder Nomkhitha Zokufa said the intention was to encourage the youth to work hard to change their situation at home.

“Today’s event was about encouraging and motivating young children to study and focus on the future.

“We want them not to focus on their current situations but rather shape themselves and look confidently towards their bright future.”

Zokufa said the organisation was satisfied knowing it was playing a role to encourage education.

“We have so much joy, satisfaction and peace because we are respecting our constitution which says a child has a right to education. We are making sure every child goes to school wearing shoes and there is no more carrying of books in a plastic bags.”

She said it was exciting to know that they were able to live by their mission, vision and goals of changing lives.

“We established the organisation to give care, support and love to our community and that is exactly what we have been doing all these years.”

Zokufa said their intention was to keep these children off the streets.

One of the parents who had attended the handover was Nomonde Mfengu-maqokolwana. She said they were grateful for the effort made by the organisation.

“The foundation has been consistent when it comes to supporting our children.

“Since 2021 when I met up with the foundation, it has been working towards our children’s success.”

She said the organisation had kept their children off the streets, which was one of the things they had always wanted.

“We had young people gallivanting in the streets, but the foundation was capable of taking them in and shape them to become the children we have always wanted them to be.

“We are really excited about the donation as it came when we were still wondering what to do. Most children cannot go to school because of the stationery they do not have, the school shoes and bags, but the foundation took the responsibility of bringing back our children’s dignity and we are truly grateful,” she said.
