Five (more) things to watch this weekend

TYMON SMITH

Blood Psalms (Showmax)

Director Jahmil XT Qubeka and producer Layla Swart bring their intriguing and proudly African ‘Game of Thrones’-style precolonial period fantasy to sprawling life. Set in the mythical Atlantis in Africa it’s a gory, sexy, magical drama filled with dragons, gods, warring families and heavy political intrigue.

Eat The Rich: The GameStop Saga

(Netflix)

A compelling three-part docuseries that chronicles the whirlwind stock trading machinations that threatened to bring the US financial system to its knees in early 2021. Millions of small-time stock buyers, using new supposedly more democratic online trading platforms and predictive forums such as Reddit and YouTube drove the stock of ailing, outdated video-game rental store GameStop to stratospheric spikes in price over a few madcap days in an effort to teach predatory hedge fund managers a lesson they’d never forget.

Minx (Showmax)

The normally depressing and gritty world of ‘70s porn in the US gets a lively, comic and smart treatment in this breezy story about an earnest young feminist who teams up with a practically minded smut publisher to create a serious magazine for women that uses ripped, well-hung, male centrefolds to lure its female target market.

Athena (Netflix)

Romain Gavras, acclaimed music video director and son of legendary French-Greek political filmmaker Costa Gavras, delivers an adrenaline-fuelled and visually inventive thriller that tackles some big-issue themes. It’s a grab-you-by-the-throat story focusing on the murder of a young immigrant boy by police and the retributive war raged against them by furious residents of the housing estate where he lived.

Murder in Provence (Britbox)

The always engaging Roger Allam and the equally charming Nancy Carroll give fine performances in this light murder mystery series adapted from the books of ML Longworth. Allam and Carroll play investigating judge Antoine Verlaque and his romantic partner Marine Bonnet whose picturesque lives are interrupted by a series of mysteries they’re called on to unravel that reveal the darker side of life in Provence.
