Making ends meet on the streets

SIVENATHI GOSA

Unemployment is one of the factors that have led some young people to get involved in criminal activities.

But not Akhona Ncapayi, who did not allow his situation to set him on the wrong path.

The 29-year-old started a small business last year selling loose cigarettes, but it has gradually expanded and he now sells energy drinks and snacks.

Ncapayi, who lives with his 21-year-old brother, said they depended solely on the profit he made from the business, which is R300 a day.

“I started this business due to the unemployment rate,” he said.

“The majority of young people in Duncan Village are stuck at home, due to not being afforded job opportunities.”

Ncapayi stands in the main road of the township, where people pass by and support his business.

“The profit I make is what keeps my brother and me alive. We do not have any other form of income, as he is still a student.”

The soft-spoken businessman said his daily routine started at 4am to reach his daily target.

“On a good day, I can make R500; that’s when it is social grant and pension day.

“Before I go back home, I make sure I restock my supplies.” Ncapayi hopes the incoming ward councillor will assist in creating jobs for the youth of the township, or that she could provide him with a shelter for his business.

“I have asked for help from the councillor, but nothing has been done yet. I am hopeful that I will get the much-needed help.”

Ncapayi sells chips, sweets, biscuits, cigarettes and soft and energy drinks.

“My dream is to leave this place and pursue my dream of going back to school, because I was never afforded the chance of furthering my studies.”

He hopes to fully assist his younger brother in chasing his dreams and getting the education he deserves.

“We grew up here in Duncan Village and I want a better life for my brother.

“We cannot rely on what I make as a street vendor forever,” he said.
