Foundation assists elderly, people living with HIV and children

Nomvulo Dumile identified a need among people living with HIV and children requiring assistance with literacy in her community.

She started the self-funded Phakamani Senze Foundation, established and registered in 2018, with a vision to assist those living with HIV, as well as helping the youth.

The foundation partners with university graduates who assist in identifying pupils struggling with their school work, and those who need assistance with applying to FET colleges and universities.

“I want to boost the sustainability of our livelihood in the community.

“There are senior citizens who live on their own and do not have people to assist them in taking their medication or assist in doing their domestic chores,” said Dumile, 66.

The NPO focuses on residents in ward 2 and ward 7, which are within Duncan Village.

“This organisation is also run by young people, because they are more aware of what is happening in our society. They assist children with school work.”

Inga Dilika, who is in charge of the foundation’s admin, said its nine members identified senior citizens who lived alone who they visited every morning to make sure they took their medication.

“There are some elderly people who go to bed on an empty stomach, so we are on a mission of combating that in our area.

“We also have an aftercare, where school pupils are assisted with their work and how to apply to further their education.”

The organisation is based in C-section and accommodates anyone from the Duncan Village township.
