ANC Youth League dissolves Eastern Cape structures

Organisation cracking down on units with lapsed terms of office and those led by members older than 35

The ANC Youth League national youth task team (NYTT) has decided to dissolve all provincial and regional structures of the formation that are not in good standing.

In the Eastern Cape, the youth league provincial task team (PTT) and eight regions have been disbanded.

Speaking to the Dispatch on Monday, the national ANCYL co-ordinator, Joy Maimela, said they had also communicated the decision to ANC provincial and regional secretaries.

“The letter we sent sought to communicate the decision of the NYTT which is to dissolve, in principle all the structures of the youth league that had a lapsed term of office in terms of the constitution, and those who were led by members or non members of the league who had surpassed the age of 35.”

Former youth league PTT coordinator Ntombikayise Mnyengeza said while disbanding structures was not a bad thing in principle, they were not happy with the manner in which the decision had been communicated.

Maimela said though the decision was not well received by some structures, the dissolution was necessary for the rebuilding of the youth league and the launching of new branches.

“I must admit that the disbandment of any structures is not an easy decision to make. There is never a time where the higher structure takes a decision to dissolve the lower one and it is accepted just like that.

“However, this decision was necessary because the structures have lapsed. There are structures that last went to congress in 2014, with the elected executive being in office for seven years instead of the required three,” Maimela said.

“These structures are not in good standing; they cannot oversee the building the ANCYL and the process of launching other structures because they too are not supposed to be in office.”

She said the decision was in line with the ANC national executive committee which advocated for the election of a new NYTT and the appointment of young people.

“An assessment will be conducted to determine the exact number of structures that are affected.

“Deployees were tasked to meet up with provincial task teams including the Eastern Cape to communicate the decision of the NYTT.

“In this particular province, the PTT and eight regions have been dissolved according to the report.

“However, the NYTT will formally communicate this at our formal meeting on Wednesday, where we will formally announce the structures that were affected by the decision and the way forward,” Maimela said.

Maimela said Wednesday’s meeting would also finalise the ANCYL road map for the election of interim structures within two weeks.

Mnyengeza confirmed the disbandment of the PTT saying it made sense because the structure was dysfunctional but did not understand the dissolution of regional structures.

“Of all the ANCYL structures in the province, it is only the Chris Hani that was not disbanded because it is in good standing.

“What we do not understand about the disbandment of all the other structures is that they submitted their files to the ANC headquarters, Luthuli House, for auditing and are still awaiting feedback.

“There is nothing wrong with the dissolution if valid reasons are provided.”

Mnyengeza said the youth league provincial structures wrote to the ANC national deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte to seek assistance and guidance on the matter.
